Rain at 7 a.m. Thursday was .77 inch. Thursday morning the sun came out and it was like spring outside. Heavy rain Tuesday and Wednesday sent many rivers and creeks out of their banks in Western North Carolina and upper South Carolina. The Town of Tryon public hearing on the Annexation will be held Wednesday at 7:30 p.m at the Tryon Elementary School cafeteria. A group opposed to the annexation S.O.S. (Save Our Suburbs" has an ad in today’s paper, giving some of their reasons for not coming into the Town. The midwest and New England areas continue to get more snow and ice storms. Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak declared his support Wednesday for Palestinian self- determination and urged President Reagan “to make it a living reality.” The Meeting Place renovations have been completed. C. 28782 Interesting Item About Abby Merchant We had a little piece in the Bulletin congratulating Miss Abby Merchant on her 100th Birthday Feb. 3rd. On Feb. 4th we received “Call Board" the Tryon Little Theater newsletter edited by Huston Brown and read the following: PETTICOAT FEVER "TLT-ers always look forward to each new production, but the March 4, 5 and 6 offering is of special interest to our whole community. Did you know that the co-author of “Petticoat Fever” not only lives in Tryon, but within a stone's throw of the very theater where her play will be presented? "We refer to Miss Abby Merchant, a sprightly and quick- witted little lady who chose Yryon upon her retirement from a professional life rich in theater experience. We are grateful to Esther Wallace for filling us in on details about Miss Merchant. “Although our publicity and the Playbill will read "Petticoat Fever, A Comedy by Mark Reed", the interesting fact is that Mark Reed and Abby Merchant collaborated on a number of plays, then took turns placing but one name on the finished script. For Abby Merchant there were "Evergreen Lady” in 1922, “The New Englander” in 1924, “Your Living Son” in 1941 and a number of one-act plays. Pittman of Miller Road has filed for the Tryon City School Board Daughter of Mrs. G. Lotan Pace and the late Mr. Pace, she is a native and life-long resident of Tryon and an honor graduate of Tryon High School, class of 1939. Her two daughters. Mrs. Judy P. Kell of Tryon and Mrs. Elaine P. Ashley of Shelby are also honor graduates of Tryon High. Two of her grandchild, “T.Tom" and Sami Kell, attend Tryon Elementary School. Mrs. Pittman’s work career includes several secretarial and accounting positions but her most recent employment was six years as nurse technician at St. Luke s Hospital followed by a term last year as teacher aide in the Tryon Continued On Back Page Price 10c Per Copy Bonds In District 1 The School District 1 Board of Trustees 1 has authorized the issuance and sale of up to $300,000 in bond anticipation notes to finance renovations at Chapman High School. Eight school principals and four assistant principals in the district have been rehired for the term The assistant principals are at Landrum High School, Mabry Junior High and two at Chapman High School. The next board meeting will be held on March 9 instead of March 2 as previously scheduled. — Spartanburg Herald Thermal Belt Stamp Club During the regular February meeting Norman Gillis of Campobello displayed an ink drawing of subject matter (annual Steeplechase) for use on cachet covers at the club sponsored stamp exhibit in Tryon on April 2- 4. The next regular meeting of the club is to be on March 1 at 7:30 p.m. in the NCNB Conference Room.
